SCATTER PIECE
THE CONCEPT
Piles showing the eye of a vortex are made using a vortex machine. Loose particles are arranged on the floor. At the centre of every movement is stillness. One pile is left untouched. One pile is different, allowing the creation of a vortex with two “eyes”. The entire floor of a large exhibition space can be precisely covered with vortex eyes.
A second piece “FOR EVER” stands next to the installation. This is a constant water vortex. It is a closed system and the motion is “continuous”. It catalyses the floor installation.
THE MACHINE…
A closed cylinder with a motor creates an updraft. A vortex forms above each individual pile of loose particles (rice, white plastic chaff). Each pile contains the same mass of material.
